About Headwaters Foundation for Justice:
Headwaters Foundation for Justice (HFJ) is a leader in social change philanthropy and mobilizes philanthropic resources to support social justice. HFJ will continue to support new and established organizations and to empower groups to build internal strength and capacity. HFJ also supports networking and collaboration among nonprofits and foundations working at the grassroots level.

HFJ is a powerful and dynamic regional agent for social change, efficiently applying its resources to the needs of its grantees. Building partnerships among donors and grantees, HFJ seeks to be highly visible and to have an active presence in Minnesota. HFJ strives to be a leader in the field of philanthropy and advocates for social justice philanthropy at a regional and national level. Through involvement in HFJ, grantees learn together, engage in social change, and build a stronger and more vital community.


Position description:
The new executive director will have significant experience and comfort level working in the institutional and corporate philanthropy sector, individual donor philanthropy, and within the grassroots community. The new executive director will help define, clarify and lead within the progressive philanthropy movement. The new executive director will help shape and lead HFJ to the cutting edge of new forms of philanthropy that will include serving as an intermediary and employing non-traditional strategies and tactics. A competitive salary and attractive benefit package is offered with this position.

  • Fundraising
  • Program management and development
  • Community and public relations
  • Human resource management
  • Board administration and support
  • Financial, risk, and facilities management

Selection criteria to qualify for this position:
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; an appropriate advanced graduate or professional degree is desirable

  • A minimum of ten years management experience in a mission driven organization with a scope and complexity that is relevant to the Headwaters Foundation for Justice

  • Current and in-depth knowledge of community foundation work and the ability to transfer that knowledge into effective strategic performance outcomes, either directly or through the management team at all levels in the organization

  • An entrepreneurial executive who is accustomed to plowing new ground and developing creative approaches within the context of a mission-driven organization with a well defined strategy

  • Demonstrated ability to personally engage, sustain, and retain relationships that advance the Headwaters Foundation for Justice vision, mission, and values among all income and ethnic groups

  • Demonstrated abilities to mentor, coach, and elicit similar relationship management results from those who hold key positions within the organization

  • Development and marketing experience with a highly visible organization where major gifts were personally solicited

  • Success in asking for and obtaining large contributions, either as a volunteer fundraiser or as an executive

  • An executive who is accustomed to leading through influence and persuasion; excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • A person who has successfully experienced reporting to and leveraging a board of directors; demonstrated ability and proven record of organizing and facilitating board members, staff, and volunteer successes in major, complex development initiatives and partnerships

  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and ability of current technology and related computer programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office 2007
