DEVELOPMENT OFFICER, CHILDREN’S HEALTH

Supervisor: Director of Development, Children’s Health



Overview:
Under the direction of the director of development for Children’s Health, this position secures significant philanthropic support for the Department of Pediatrics and the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview (Children’s Health). The development officer will develop and maintain a portfolio of donor prospects and will solicit major gifts. Major gift prospects are primarily individuals and may include some corporations, foundations and businesses. This position will also be assigned special fundraising projects or initiatives and will occasionally work jointly with foundation development directors and gift planning professionals.


Responsibilities:

70% - Major Gifts
  • Identify, assess, cultivate and solicit prospective donors, primarily individuals, with an emphasis on current and future major gifts.
  • Specific expectations are to achieve levels of activity after the first year that will result in:
    • An assigned prospect pool of 50-100 prospects with focus on building the size and quality of the prospect pool.
    • Presentation of a minimum of 15 proposals annually of $25,000 or more.
    • Execution of 12-15 documented prospect steps (moves) each month which represent significant advancement of an ongoing relationship through cultivation, solicitation, closing the gift and stewardship.
  • Serve as a member of the overall development team by collaborating with colleagues across disciplines on donor strategies, maintaining timely, accurate reports and information.
  • Working in conjunction with MMF central services staff, develop and oversee the development of proposals and written material in support of specific major gift fundraising initiatives.
  • Clear and coordinate prospective donors through appropriate MMF procedures to ensure effective solicitation of the donor.
30% - Organizational
  • Develop an annual plan of work, including specific fundraising, prospect development and programmatic goals. Prepare reports and other required information as requested.
  • Serve on committees and attend Department of Pediatrics, University of Minnesota Children's Hospital, and MMF meetings as appropriate.
  • Attend staff meetings as requested by the directors of development, associate vice president and MMF leadership.
  • Attend University and external functions as recommended by the Department of Pediatrics, University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, MMF, Medical School or Academic Health Center.
  • Accept and implement other duties and assignments as directed.

Minimum (required) qualifications:
  • Baccalaureate degree from accredited college or university
  • Minimum of three years experience in a professional fundraising environment

Preferred qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience in identification, cultivation and solicitation of major gifts
  • Experience working in higher education, health or disease-related institution strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated success in project management
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Outstanding oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work evenings and weekends, as necessary
  • Effective computer experience including database operation and word processing
