SENIOR COMMUNITY RELATIONS SPECIALIST
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans

This position is responsible for helping to develop, manage, and execute Thrivent Financial's community relations strategy. This includes strategic management of company resources to ensure the company’s community investment and commitment are leveraged most effectively in alignment with the company’s mission, vision, and values.


Position roles/responsibilities/accountabilities:
  • Provide a wide range of project management needed to successfully execute community relations strategies, initiatives, and reporting
  • Develop proactive community and not-for-profit partnership opportunities that build long-term value for the company
  • Interface and develop relationships with not-for-profit organizations and community leaders on behalf of the company
  • Build and expand awareness and understanding among company employees, members, and stakeholders regarding company’s community relations programs and strategies
  • Develop strategic sponsorship opportunities that further the company’s brand and business goals with its target audiences
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the corporate grantmaking programs, including continuous improvement of granting policies and procedures as appropriate
  • Conduct research on issues of relevance to community relations, philanthropic field, and corporate citizenship
  • Participate in interdepartmental team projects and events as assigned, such as volunteerism, employee giving, employee gift matching

Position qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, or not-for-profit preferred
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Community relations experience (5-7 years) or related experience preferably in large complex organizations
  • Knowledge of not-for-profit organizations and governance, corporate grantmaking processes, and the ability to assess the viability and success of not-for-profit organizations
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and demonstrated ability to develop, manage, and implement strategic community relations plans
  • Demonstrated commitment to community service through personal volunteerism
  • Understanding of financial services, not-for-profits, and fraternal benefit societies
  • Experience in developing event planning activities and willingness to attend night and weekend events
  • Strong organizational management, project management, and financial management skills
  • Ability to effectively develop and maintain collaborative work relationships and work with a variety of people at all organizational levels
  • Knowledge of grantmaking principles and guidelines
  • Ability to conduct effective research and evaluate grant requests
  • Strong interpersonal skills that build respect, trust, confidence, and credibility, which facilitate partnering with a variety of not-for-profit organizations
  • Ability to generate ideas and provide leadership to the creative thinking process
  • Ability to serve internal and external customers, proactively identifying and meeting customer needs
  • Excellent technical, verbal, and written communications skills; effective presentation skills
  • Ability to maintain a balance between strategic thinking and a focus on daily operational issues
