ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, ARTIST PROGRAM
Bush Foundation

The Bush Foundation is searching for an Assistant Director for its Artist Program. This individual has success working in an art discipline and will demonstrate initiative and support for continued development of the program as it aligns with the foundation’s new strategic direction.

The Bush Foundation was established in 1953 by 3M executive Archibald Granville Bush and his wife Edyth. With a mission to improve the quality of life in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, the foundation aims to be a catalyst to shape vibrant communities by investing in courageous and effective leadership that significantly strengths and improves the well-being of people in these three states.

The Assistant Director position is full time and works with a program team. Essential job functions:
  • Provide guidance and general assistance to applicants throughout the submission and review process, and oversee the Fellows’ support services (e.g., payments, reports).
  • Research, plan, and manage Fellows’ programs including orientation, gatherings, annual public announcement and other professional development activities.
  • Oversee all operational aspects of the panel reviews including scheduling, travel arrangements, organization and distribution of applications and panel materials, and presentation of work samples.
  • Oversee and manage the ongoing integration of new digital technology formats in all aspects of the Bush Artists Program (BAP).
  • Oversee and manage visual arts finalist review of original work.
  • Research and conduct preliminary screening of potential review panelists.
  • Create and provide content for the Fellows Program website in collaboration with the foundation’s communication and information technology staff.
  • Manage all communication about the BAP including guidelines, promotional materials, media releases, form letters, website, and other tools designed to inform about the application process and Fellows in cooperation with the foundation’s communication staff.
  • Manage external communications with artist grantees and act as BAP representative at art / community events. Represent the program and foundation at public meetings and conferences as assigned by the Program Director.
  • Oversee BAP data and information systems, working in cooperation with the foundation’s information technology staff.

Key relationships:
The Assistant Director works closely with a diverse population which includes foundation colleagues, Fellows and applicants of the program, consultants, and vendors. The Assistant Director works closely with the Program Assistant overseeing completion of program details.


Experience and qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree required with a minimum three years work experience; preferably in an arts discipline. Experience in more than one art form is also preferred.
  • Direct communicator that is respectful with all constituents.
  • Effective planning and organizational skills and ability to prioritize responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates written, verbal and presentation skills.
  • Manages multiple work projects and attends to the details as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates resourcefulness, problem solving and decision making ability.
  • Takes initiative to complete assignments, meet deadlines and is adaptable to a changing environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with success in building and maintaining relationships.
  • Success using Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Access, and other office related software and databases. Knowledge of Web 2.0 and experience with new digital technology is highly desirable. Working knowledge of both Mac and PC platforms desired.

Additional information:
The Assistant Director works in a general office environment requiring ability to sit or stand for periods of time. Occasional attendance of weekend meetings is required. Occasional travel is required. Ability to lift or move 25 lbs required. The Bush Foundation offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits.
