The Margaret A. Cargill
Philanthropies is looking for talent! The MAC Philanthropies, currently located
in Wayzata, MN, encompasses three different grant making organizations which are
dedicated to providing meaningful assistance and support to society, the arts,
the environment, and all living things. This exciting, fast-growing organization
will be relocating to Eden Prairie in the fall of 2010, to accommodate its
growth.
Reporting relationship: Reports to COO
Job Purpose: The Director will be responsible for leading and developing grantee
relationships and funding requests for named beneficiaries of the Anne Ray
Charitable Trust, one of three entities under the Margaret A. Cargill
Philanthropies.
Job Duties:

Collaborate with ART executive management team and board to present grant
proposals consistent with the ART guiding principles and the beneficiary
organization strategic initiatives

Develop collaborative relationships with named beneficiary organizations,
including domestic and international contacts; Relationships will be based on a
deep understanding of each organizations’ strategic direction, operating
priorities, and unique challenges

Provide broad funding strategies including grant planning, development and
review; Work with VP of Finance to develop grantee distribution levels and the
associated grant budget ranges that reflect the most current tax and legislative
rulings as it relates to nonprofit organizations, direction from the board of
trustees, upcoming grant requests, and the grantees’ capacity to receive funds.

In collaboration with the VP of Research and Evaluation:
1.) Identify and prioritize potential areas appropriate for research and
exploration; and
2.) Develop alternatives for analyzing grant impact and effectiveness; implement
selected impact and evaluation strategies and analyze effectiveness with the
goal of program improvement, learning, and growth. Share and use learnings as
appropriate.

Partner with grantees to develop funding proposals that foster outcomes and
results aligned with the vision, mission, and values of the Margaret A. Cargill
Philanthropies; Work with grantee organizations to prioritize and translate the
assessed needs into realistic grant proposals that are within their capacity to
deliver and the Trust’s capacity to fund; Provide meaningful presentation
materials for the members of the board of trustees; implement approved grant
awards

Coordinate, at minimum, quarterly communications with key representatives of
the beneficiary organizations; Participate in and/or coordinate in-person
meetings with grantee representatives, including selected site visits when
possible / practical, at least twice per year.

Lead the program staff of the Anne Ray Trust, including hiring, training,
supervision, performance management, and compensation issues, in close
collaboration with Human Resources. The Director will work closely with his/her
staff, taking every opportunity to coach and mentor as programs are developed
and beneficiary relations are built.

Coordinate with MAC Philanthropies staff and shared service areas of process
and administration to promote consistency as appropriate and avoid duplication.
Maintain professional contacts in partner philanthropic organizations; Attend
appropriate programs to build expertise in select areas and build relationships
with external organizations
Work in partnership with management team to advance the overall philanthropic
vision of Margaret A. Cargill
Education and Experience:
- Graduate level academic degree in a related field or equivalent level of
experience. Minimum requirement is an undergraduate degree with at least 15
years of relevant experience.
- Significant and demonstrated leadership experience in a foundation, trust or
philanthropic organizational setting
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to think strategically; demonstrated record of success working
with a diverse constituency of partners and stakeholders
- Familiar with government regulations around grant-making and foundation
regulations
- Strong written communications skills. Professional demeanor with proven ability
to build collaborative relationships. Self-motivated and able to work
independently
Travel: 30%, including potential for some international travel
Special Requirements: Ability to interface well with internal and external business associates in a
highly professional manner and to maintain the highest level of confidentiality
in both internal and external relationships. Multi-task orientated.
