Director of Domestic Disaster Relief and the International Relief of Suffering for the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation

The Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies is looking for talent! The MAC Philanthropies, currently located in Wayzata, MN, encompasses three different grant making organizations which are dedicated to providing meaningful assistance and support to society, the arts, the environment, and all living things. This exciting, fast-growing organization will be relocating to Eden Prairie in the fall of 2010, to accommodate its growth.

Reporting Relationship: COO for the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation

Purpose: To develop and implement disaster relief and relief of suffering strategies for Domestic Disaster Relief program as well as the International Relief of Suffering (IROS) program for the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation, in collaboration with CEO, COO and the VP of Research and Evaluation. The Margaret A. Cargill Foundation is one of three entities of the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies which are dedicated to providing meaningful assistance and support to society, the arts, the environment, and all living things.

FTE: 100%

Job Duties:

  • Identify Domestic Disaster Relief and IROS needs and assess current state of funding
  • Develop strategic alternatives for grant making
  • Identify and prioritize potential areas of funding for further exploration with input from the CEO and COO
  • Collaborate with Research and Evaluation to develop alternatives for analyzing grant impact and effectiveness for the purpose of achieving learning and growth for the Foundation, grantees and other organizations working to improve Domestic Disaster Relief and IROS
  • Develop strategies for accessing program expertise external to the Foundation to provide input and guidance for grant making strategies
  • Collaborate with Foundation program staff to implement Domestic Disaster Relief and IROS grant making strategies
  • Provide effective leadership for staff including: recruiting, training and development, assigning and directing work and appraising performance. The Director will work closely with his/her staff, taking every opportunity to coach and mentor as they work through intricate policy development and implementation issues
  • Oversee the overall Domestic Disaster Relief and IROS budget, their development, management, and compliance
  • Evaluate opportunities to coordinate and collaborate with other funders to multiply overall impact on Domestic Disaster Relief and IROS
  • Stay abreast of trends, practices, laws, developments in technology and other related aspects of the Domestic Disaster Relief and International Relief of Suffering programs
  • Regularly make site visits, attend conferences, and represent the Foundation regarding its Domestic Disaster Relief and IROS policy and initiatives. Represent the Foundation externally with peer organizations for the purpose of both learning about and sharing best practices and for supporting professional development
  • Work in partnership with other leaders of initiatives of the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies to advance the overall philanthropic vision of Margaret A. Cargill.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of various strategic initiatives.

Education and Experience:

Graduate level academic degree in a related field or equivalent level of experience. Minimum requirement is an undergraduate degree with at least 15 years of relevant experience.

Extensive experience and recognition in Domestic Disaster Relief and/or IROS with a proven track record of success and leadership accomplishment

An understanding of the key issues in the Domestic Disaster Relief and International Relief of Suffering fields, a sophisticated knowledge of political and economic implications, and a demonstrated ability to navigate these issues diplomatically

Proven ability to think strategically; demonstrated record of success working with a diverse constituency of partners and stakeholders to achieve specific policy and programmatic outcomes

Strong interpersonal and communications skills. Professional demeanor with proven ability to build collaborative relationships. Self-motivated and able to work independently

Travel: 25-50%, including potential for some international travel
