Creating Shared Value: Corporations' Evolving Role in Solving Social Problems
Session Leader: Greg Hills, Managing Director, FSG

Why is “shared value” the current buzz in corporate responsibility and philanthropy circles? What does it mean for corporate philanthropy efforts and staff? Greg Hills will present “Creating Shared Value” (CSV) based on the recent Harvard Business Review article of the same name by FSG founders Michael Porter and Mark Kramer. In this highly interactive session, Greg will explore with participants how leading companies create competitive advantage by addressing social problems within their business model. Key topics will include: the three approaches for creating shared value (CSV), how to start the CSV journey within your company, building the business case for CSV, and integrating CSV within the business. The session will illuminate lessons learned from companies on the CSV journey, with a particular focus on several Minnesota companies. Prepare to share and discuss your successes and challenges with applying this evolving concept in your companies.

Collective Impact & Corporate Giving: Working With Others Toward Social Change
Session Leader: Greg Hills, Managing Director, FSG

When is going it alone not going to get you the results your company is seeking with its philanthropic dollars? Greg Hills will discuss the paradigm shift from isolated, individual action to collective impact for addressing complex social problems. Based on FSG’s November 2010 article "Collective Impact" in the Stanford Social Innovation Review, this presentation and discussion will address key conditions for success and mindset shifts required to successfully execute collective impact initiatives in your communities. It includes the strategic and tactical lessons learned in developing and executing collective impact initiatives and provides visual examples of key elements.  The session will also address important questions about the role of corporate funders in collective impact initiatives.
