Medtronic Announces Comprehensive Aid Package to Support Victims of Terrorist Attacks Minneapolis-based Medtronic has announced that its board of directors has approved a grant of $500,000 to assist the families of New York City firefighters, police and emergency medical services personnel who were killed, injured or lost when the World Trade Center collapsed on September 11. The grant is part of a more comprehensive aid package exceeding $1.25 million, which includes a $100,000 grant to the American Red Cross for general disaster relief efforts related to the attacks in New York City and Washington. "Medtronic has had longstanding relationships with many first responders in New York City, such as police, firefighters and EMS personnel," said Art Collins, Medtronic CEO. "These donations are intended to help alleviate the suffering of the victims' families and to ensure that the long-term emergency response needs of the city can be met." Through Medtronic Physio-Control, which manufactures an array of life-saving devices commonly used by first responders, the company has donated LIFEPAK 500 automated external defibrillators (AEDs), LIFEPAK defibrillator/monitors, battery support systems and electrodes for emergency monitoring and life support. Initial estimates are that at least a dozen ambulances and/or fire trucks and police vehicles were buried under the rubble of the World Trade Center. The loss of those vehicles, as well as the emergency equipment contained in them, could pose additional problems as the city attempts to return to normal. "The brave individuals who gave their lives while trying to help others must never be forgotten," said Collins. "Our product donations and financial support will help New York City respond to the disaster and provide excellent health care service in emergency response situations, despite the continuing crisis. Our hearts, our thoughts and our prayers go out to the victims of this tragedy, and Medtronic stands ready to do its part to help New York City and the rest of the nation heal." |
