Fall 2006 Edition
Early Childhood Funding: Birth of an Issue
It's a startling statistic: Minnesota Department of Education research shows that more than half of kindergartners lack the basic language, math and social/emotional skills they need to succeed in school. Research now shows that learning begins in infancy, and the quality of care that children receive before starting school has a lasting impact on their futures. Many Minnesota foundations have made it a priority to do whatever they can to help fill the gap created by a decrease in government funding.

Dear Members:
A special thank you to all of you who attended the Joint MCF/MCN Conference -- Common Ground for Common Good -- last week. Early reviews give the conference high marks for stimulating speakers, interesting breakout sessions and exceptional networking opportunities. Of course the partnership with Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, bringing grantmakers and nonprofits together, is a big part of that success.
We look forward to receiving more feedback with the online evaluation that is being distributed this week. And watch for the conference presentations that will be posted online in the coming days.

Volunteer for the Independent Sector Conference

Many Voices, Shared Purpose: Working Together To Save Lives
October 22-24
Just two weeks after the MCF/MCN statewide joint annual conference, the Independent Sector national conference will give you the opportunity to join forces with 800 CEOs and senior-level executives from across the United States to address critical issues facing the charitable community and the people we serve.
As a volunteer, you will work with the staff of Independent Sector, a Washington, D.C.-based coalition of more than 550 charitable organizations, meet senior-level professionals from across the sector, and have a chance to attend selected sessions that fit with your interests. Ellen Luger of General Mills is coordinating the volunteer effort. Please contact Nicole Speulda at 202.467.6130 or nicoles@independentsector.org with questions.
