Description: Food literacy is defined as knowing what we are eating and understanding where it comes from. At the next Healthy Foods, Healthy Communities Funders Network meeting, we will explore several models designed to improve the quality of the food available to consumers and to enhance their food-related choices.

We’ll hear from a panel of local experts who are doing innovative work in this and associated areas. The presentation will include food-literacy frameworks and drivers for effective change, and programs designed to educate consumers and help them make better decisions regarding nutrition, meal planning and cooking, gardening and food preservation.

You’ll leave with a better understanding of what initiatives network members are funding, criteria to help you determine what to fund in this area and a better understanding of food literacy, food systems literacy, food environments and nationally recognized best practices.

Panelists:

  • Kristine Igo, associate director, Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives Institute, University of Minnesota
  • Deb McConnell, healthcare strategy coordinator, Office of Statewide Health Improvement Initiatives
  • Barbara Grossman, Urban Operations Director, University of Minnesota Extension
