Part of MCF’s Effective Grantmaking Series.

Description: At this program for staff of family, independent and corporate foundations, specialists in foundation law will share their expertise on the many statutes, regulations and rules that affect private and corporate foundations. The program will shed light on the intricacies of fiscal agents, self-dealing, lobbying and the current legal environment affecting foundations.

Other questions that will be answered include:

  • Can a foundation pay for fundraiser tickets?
  • Can a family foundation pay for a family member's travel?
  • Should foundations use fiscal agents?
  • When can directors and officers be held liable?
  • How are ethical and legal conflicts avoided?
  • What are the rules on endowment fund management?
  • How do the Treasury Department's antiterrorism guidelines affect foundations?

Information and resources will be pertinent to family, independent and corporate grantmakers. The program is tailored for newer foundation staff and those who want to review basic legal requirements of foundations.
