This issue of Giving Forum focuses on private independent foundations, including Minnesota’s largest, the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation.

Private independent foundations are typically endowed by a single individual or family; are considered independent if they don't have active donor involvement; are committed to public purposes; and may be less restricted by family oversight than family foundations, less driven by corporate concerns than corporate foundations, and less constrained by fundraising than community foundations.
