How Much is Granted to Arts, Culture and Humanities?
Funding for the arts by the sample was one of the slowest growing areas of
grantmaking in 2007. Contributions totaled $117.7 million in 2007, up
slightly from $114.2 million in 2006. Of eight subject areas, the share of
total grant dollars going to the arts has decreased slightly in recent years
– from 16 percent in 2005 to 14 percent in 2006 to 13 percent in 2007.
Declines during this period were due in part to the conclusion of capital
campaigns by several major arts organizations.
Where Do Arts, Culture and Humanities Dollars Go?
Two subcategories, performing arts and other arts/cultural organizations,
continued to receive the largest share of grant dollars among arts
subcategories in 2007, at 36 percent and 20 percent, respectively. Arts
services, humanities, and historical societies received the smallest share
of grant dollars – all between 2 and 3 percent. Giving to several arts
subcategories declined, with the visual arts, media/communications, and arts
services posting the most significant declines.
What Types of Grantmakers Fund Arts, Culture and Humanities?
Corporate grantmakers in the sample increased their share of grant dollars
to the arts, to 55 percent in 2007, an 11 percentage point increase since
2005. Much of this change was due to increased giving to the arts by Target
Foundation. Conversely, private foundation giving to the arts by the sample
has dropped 11 percentage points since 2005. In 2007, private foundations
provided 33 percent of the grant dollars for the arts. Community/ public
foundations’ share has remained relatively steady, at 12 percent in 2007,
following two years of 11 percent shares.

Culture and Humanities Funders?

arts by the sample in 2007:
- Target Foundation & Corporation
- The McKnight Foundation
