Education grantmaking includes
contributions to educational institutions (schools, colleges and
universities), libraries, and other organizations that provide
education-related services. Other recipients include alumni
associations, English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) programs and adult
literacy services.
Information in this fact sheet is
based on an analysis of 27,243 grants of $2,000 or more, made by a
sample of 100 of the largest grantmakers in Minnesota. The total
giving of these 100 large grantmakers accounted for approximately 82
percent of all grant dollars paid in the state in 2007, the latest
year for which complete data are available.

How Much is Granted to
Education?
Education grantmaking includes contributions to educational institutions
(schools, colleges and universities), libraries, and other organizations
that provide education-related services. Other recipients include alumni
associations, English-as-a-Second- In 2007, grantmakers in the sample
awarded $245.6 million to education, up from $218.5 million in 2006.
Education accounts for the largest share of the state’s total grant dollars,
at 27 percent. Education has been Minnesota’s top-ranked subject area in all
but two years – 2001 and 2005 – since MCF began tracking grants data.
Funding for education grew by 12 percent in 2007.
Where Do Education
Dollars Go?
As in previous years, elementary/secondary education and higher education
and professional schools received the largest shares of education grant
dollars (39 percent and 24 percent, respectively) in 2007. Both these
subcategories grew by 11 percent in 2007. Nineteen percent of Minnesota’s
education grant dollars went to student or educational services – such as
after-school, college readiness, tutoring, drop-out prevention, and reading
promotion programs – making it the third largest subcategory in education.
What Types of Grantmakers Fund Education?
In 2007, the shares of funding provided to education by private, corporate,
and community/public grantmakers were in line with 2006. Corporate
grantmakers gave 54 percent, private foundations granted 35 percent, and
community/public foundations provided 11 percent of the philanthropic
funding to education in 2007.

These five grantmakers gave 50 percent of all dollars given to
education by the sample in 2007:

- Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation
