Giving in Minnesota Sample Trends:
Arts, Culture and Humanities Grantmaking

Grantmaking to Arts, Culture and Humanities includes contributions to the Performing Arts, Museums, Media/Communication, Art/Cultural Organizations, Historical Societies, Visual Arts, Humanities and Arts Services.

In 2004, the Giving in Minnesota sample gave a total of more than $115 million in grants to Arts, Culture and Humanities, comprising a 15-percent share of total Minnesota grant dollars. The Performing Arts subcategory receiving the highest share (35 percent) of Arts grant dollars followed by the museums with 21 percent.

Trends in Arts Grantmaking

Trends and patterns in Arts, Culture and Humanities grantmaking from 1990 to 2004 reveal fluctuations in shares of grant dollars at both the state and national levels. Despite this, Minnesota’s percentage share of Arts, Culture and Humanities grantmaking (15 percent) was slightly higher than the national average of 13 percent. As in 2003, the year 2004 witnessed special grantmaking activity in the arts: a single $3.57-million grant to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts by The Wood-Rill Foundation and a $2.43-million grant to the Walker Art Center by The Minneapolis Foundation.

In addition, the increase in share of Arts, Culture and Humanities grantmaking is also attributable to more organizations receiving $1 million or more, up from 15 in 2003 to 18 in 2004, as well as capital campaigns by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minnesota Public Radio, The Guthrie Theater and Walker Art Center.

Arts Grantmaking by Grantmaker Type

In 2004, private and community/public foundations saw increases in percentage shares of Arts, Culture and Humanities grantmaking of 4 percent and 1 percent, respectively, compared to corporate grantmakers, which saw a 5-percent decline in share.

Unlike private foundations, which as a group decreased their percentage share of Arts grantmaking in 2003, corporate foundations and giving programs have continued to sustain giving and have held the highest share since 2002. In 2004, however, corporate foundations and giving programs had the same percentage of share as private foundations, despite corporate foundations’ 5-percent decrease in total Arts grants, which may be related to the timing of capital campaign commitments.

Arts Grantmaking by Subcategory

Despite fluctuation in size of share, the Performing Arts and Museums subcategories continue to have the highest share of grant dollars among Arts subcategories. In 2004, both subcategories saw declines in share of grant dollars, with Performing Arts having a 4-percent decrease in shares from 39 percent in 2003 to 35 percent in 2004 and Museums a 2-percent decrease from 23 percent to 21 percent.

The Other Arts/Cultural Organizations subcategory saw the highest increase in number of share of grant dollars at 7 percent, from 4 percent in 2003 to 11 percent in 2004.
