Giving in Minnesota Sample Trends:
Environment/Animals
Grantmaking
The Environment/Animals subject area includes two broad categories that are further divided into subcategories. Environment grants include those made to organizations that focus on the preservation and protection of the environment, botanical gardens and societies, urban beautification and environmental education. Recipients of Environment grants include recycling programs, resources conservation, botanical gardens and wildlife preservation organizations.
The Animals subject area includes grants to organizations that focus on the care and protection of animals including wildlife, pets or specialty animals, such as animal population control organizations, bird sanctuaries and zoos.
In 2004, the Giving in Minnesota sample made approximately $25 million in grants to the Environment/Animals subject area. Grantmaking in this category accounted for only 3 percent of total grant dollars, with the Natural Resources Conservation and Zoo/Zoological Society subcategories having the highest percentage shares of Environment/Animals grants at 61 percent and 12 percent, respectively.
Environment/Animals Grantmaking Trends
The share of grantmaking to Environment/Animals has remained a constant 3 percent since 2001, about half the national average of 5 percent in 2004 and 6 percent in 2003.
Environment/Animals Grantmaking by Grantmaker Type
In 2004, both corporate grantmakers and community/public foundations witnessed a decrease in share of grant dollars to Environment/Animals as private foundations picked up a greater share of funding in this category.
Private foundations had the highest share in 2004 grant dollars at 71 percent and saw a 13-percent increase from 58 percent in 2003. This jump can be attributed to grants paid by two private foundations. The McKnight Foundation increased giving to Environment/Animals in 2004 to about $10 million from $5.3 million in 2003, and the E.M. Pearson Foundation gave $1.9 million to Como Zoo and Conservatory in 2004 as part of that foundation’s final payout of assets.
Corporate foundations and giving programs experienced a decrease in grant dollars and percentage share in the Environment/Animals category from 26 percent in 2003 to 17 percent in 2004. As stated in
Giving in Minnesota, 2005 Edition, this decline can be attributed in part to a one-time $1-million grant in 2003 by Cargill Foundation, which accounted for the increased share in the previous year.
Community foundations continue to have the smallest share of grant dollars for Environment/Animals. In 2004, community foundations saw a slight growth in total dollars to Environment/Animals but reduced share from 16 percent in 2003 to 12 percent in 2004, as private foundations gained a stronger share position.
Largest Environment/Animal Grantmakers
Minnesota’s five largest Environment/Animals grantmakers in 2004:

Environment/Animals Grantmaking by Subcategory
The Natural Resources Conservation and Protection subcategory has maintained the highest share in grant dollars despite the shifts in amount of shares. Natural Resources saw an increased share of grant dollars from 50 percent in 2003 to 61 percent in 2004. Again, this improvement is attributable to increased giving by The McKnight Foundation and E.M. Pearson Foundation.
In addition to the Natural Resources subcategory, which saw a high increase of 11 percent, only Pollution Abatement and Control Services and Zoos/Zoological Societies saw increased shares of grantmaking, although minimal, of 3 percent and 1 percent, respectively.
