Giving in Minnesota Sample Trends:
Health
Grantmaking
Health grantmaking includes the following four subcategories: General & Rehabilitative Health, Mental Health/Crisis Intervention, Multipurpose Health Associations/Services Associated with Specific Diseases/Disorders/Medical Discipline, and Medical Research. Health grant recipients include hospitals and health care centers, alcohol and drug abuse treatment centers, cancer associations and AIDS research organizations.
In 2004, the Health category received more than $81 million in grant dollars, representing an 11-percent share of Minnesota’s total grant dollars, with the General & Rehabilitative Health subcategory having the highest share of Health grants at 66 percent.
Trends in Health Grantmaking
Health grantmaking at the national level has generally had almost a 50-percent higher share of grant dollars than to the state level. However, Minnesota has seen small increases in share of Health grant dollars over the years since a dip in 1999.
In 2004, the share of Minnesota grant dollars to Health rose by 3 percent. Besides incremental growth, the large improvement is attributable to a $20-million grant from the Blandin Foundation to the Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital, some $4 million in Health grants from E.M. Pearson Foundation, and the first year that Healthier Minnesota Community Clinic Fund was included in the Giving in Minnesota sample.
Health Grantmaking by Grantmaker Type
As in previous years, private foundations accounted for the highest share in grant dollars (63 percent) in Health grantmaking in 2004.
Private foundations increased their share of Health grants following a two-year decline. The large increase in share of giving, as stated earlier, can be attributed to grantmaking by three private foundations: Blandin Foundation, E.M. Pearson Foundation and the Healthier Minnesota Community Clinic Fund.
Corporate foundations and giving programs saw their share of Health grant dollars drop lower than the two previous years. Although less than a $3-million dip in grant dollars, Health grantmaking by corporate grantmakers decreased from a 36-percent share in 2003 to a 20-percent share in 2004, as private foundations gained a stronger share position.
Community/public foundations have had the lowest share of Health grant dollars among the three grantmaker types. In 2004, they saw a 9-percent decrease from 26 percent in 2003 to 17 percent in 2004, again related to the growth in share by private foundations.

Health Grantmaking by Subcategory
Mental Health/Crisis Intervention and Multipurpose Health were the only two Health subcategories that saw increases in share of grant dollars in 2004, 5 percent and 1 percent, respectively. Mental Health/Crisis Intervention saw the highest growth in share, from 9 percent in 2003 to 14 percent in 2004, and an increase in grant dollars from $5 million in 2003 to nearly $12 million in 2004.
General & Rehabilitative Health saw a significant increase in grant dollars from $35 million in 2003 to $53 million in 2004. Continuing to rank first among the Health subcategories, General & Rehabilitative Health maintained the same percentage share (66 percent) in 2004 as the previous year, even as the Mental Health subcategory in particular gained a larger share of Health grantmaking. Medical Research saw a reduction in share by 7 percent from 15 percent in 2003 to 8 percent in 2004.
