Giving in Minnesota Sample Trends:
International Affairs Grantmaking

The International Affairs category encompasses organizations that promote international understanding, provide international development and relief, or address international human rights, security and peace, and other international issues. In 2004, the Giving in Minnesota sample paid more than $4.2 million in International Affairs grants, maintaining a 1-percent share of total grant dollars. International Development and Relief Services received the highest share of grant dollars among the subcategories with 52 percent.

Trends in International Grantmaking

International Affairs grantmaking in general has been higher nationally than in Minnesota. Minnesota’s share of grant dollars to International Affairs in 2004 remained constant at 1 percent while the national grantmaking level averaged 3 percent.

International Affairs Grantmaking by Grantmaker Type

For the second consecutive year, private foundations and corporate grantmakers provided the highest share of grant dollars to International Affairs at 44 percent and 30 percent, respectively.

Private foundations continue to lead giving to International Affairs among the three grantmaker types, despite a decrease in share of grant dollars from 63 percent in 2003 to 44 percent in 2004. While private foundations lead the category, both corporate and community/public grantmakers have increased their shares of International giving.

Corporate foundations and giving programs increased their share of International grantmaking from 22 percent in 2003 to 30 percent in 2004. Increasingly more corporate grantmakers have overseas operations, and they respond significantly to natural disasters here and in other parts of the world where they have employees and customers.

Community/public foundations witnessed the highest increase in share of grant dollars among the three grantmakers, from 15 percent in 2003 to 26 percent in 2004. These foundations have played a large role in generating funds and allocating grants for overseas disaster relief.

Only two International Affairs subcategories, International Human Rights and Other International Affairs, gained share of grant dollars, with increases of 4 percent and 6 percent, respectively. Neither the International Peace and Security and Promotion of International Understanding subcategories witnessed change in share of grant dollars.
