Giving in Minnesota, 2006 Edition
Giving in Minnesota Sample Trends:
Religion Grantmaking

The Religion category includes grants to any worship or faith-based organizations. Grant recipients include churches, synagogues, councils (for example, the Council of Churches) and associations. In 2004, Religion received more than $34 million in grant dollars, which accounted for 5 percent of total grants, with the Christian subcategory receiving the highest share at 85 percent.

Trends in Religion Grantmaking

Minnesota has had a higher percentage share of grant dollars to Religion than the national level since 1994. In 2004, neither the state nor the national levels saw changes in the share of grant dollars; they remained at 5 percent and 2 percent, respectively.

Religion Funding by Grantmaker Type

Corporate foundations and giving programs and community/public foundations both witnessed decreases in percentage of grant dollars to Religion in 2004, declining by 4 percent and 11 percent, respectively.

Private foundations witnessed a substantial increase in grant shares from 25 percent in 2003 to 40 percent in 2004. This boost is attributable to heavy giving to religion by the Dorea Foundation, Sabes Family Foundation and Wallestad Foundation, all of which made less than $1 million in grants in 2003 and were therefore not included in the Giving in Minnesota sample in 2003. In 2004, The Gamar Foundation doubled its Religion giving to $2 million, and E.M. Pearson Foundation increased its Religion giving from about $31,000 to $650,000, in paying out assets and closing the foundation.

Corporate foundations and giving programs saw a decrease in their share of grant dollars to Religion from 23 percent in 2003 to 19 percent in 2004, as private foundations gained a greater share.

Community/public foundations decreased their share of grants dollars to Religion from 52 percent in 2003 to 41 percent in 2004. This decline is attributable to the $10.6-million grant to the Minneapolis Jewish Federation by The Minneapolis Foundation in 2003 that was not repeated in 2004.

Largest Religion Grantmakers
Minnesota’s five largest Religion grantmakers in 2004:
  1. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans
  2. Garmar Foundation
  3. The Minneapolis Foundation
  4. Catholic Community Foundation in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul & Minneapolis
  5. Lutheran Community Foundation

Trends in Religion Grantmaking by Subcategory

The Christian and Jewish subcategories witnessed the largest shifts in shares of Religion grant dollars, with the former having the highest increase and the latter the biggest decline in share of grant dollars. As in the previous years, the Christian subcategory continued to have the highest share of grants; this group witnessed a 30-percent increase from 55 percent in 2003 to 85 percent in 2004. The Council attributes this to the increase in number of grants, from 781 equaling $21 million in 2003 to 942 totaling $29.3 million in 2004.

The Jewish subcategory had a 31-percent decline in share of grant dollars from 36 percent in 2003 to 5 percent in 2004. The steep drop can be directly attributed to a one-time $10.6 million grant to Minneapolis Jewish Federation in 2003 that was not repeated in 2004.
