The human services subject area consists
of the following subcategories: multipurpose human services;
housing/shelter; youth development; public safety, disaster
preparedness and relief; food, nutrition and agriculture; public
protection; employment/jobs; and recreation, leisure and sports.
Information in this fact sheet is
based on an analysis of 27,243 grants of $2,000 or more, made by a
sample of 100 of the largest grantmakers in Minnesota. The total
giving of these 100 large grantmakers accounted for approximately 82
percent of all grant dollars paid in the state in 2007, the latest
year for which complete data are available.

How Much is Granted to Human Services?
Grantmakers in the sample gave $222.9 million to human services in 2007, up
from $188 million in 2006. Human services is the second largest of eight
subject areas; it captured 24 percent of grant dollars in 2007. It is also
the fastest growing subject area. Giving to human services grew by 18
percent from 2006 to 2007.
Where Do Human Services
Dollars Go?
The largest share of the sample’s human services grant dollars – 46 percent
– or $101.8 million went to the multipurpose human services subcategory,
which includes human service organizations, social and family services, and
residential and custodial care. Housing/shelter and youth development are
the next largest subcategories within human services, capturing 15 and 14
percent of the grantmaking by the sample, respectively. Public safety,
disaster preparedness and relief is the smallest subcategory in human
services. In 2007, this area received 3 percent of the grant dollars to
human services, or $7.5 million.
What Types of Grantmakers Fund Human Services?
Giving to human services by all grantmaker types in the sample increased
significantly in 2007 compared to 2006. Private foundations provided $103.5
million to human services, a 14 percent increase from 2006, and 46 percent
of the giving to this subject area. Corporate grantmakers provided 35
percent of the giving to this issue area. Giving by corporate grantmakers
has risen steadily in recent years – by 7 percent in 2006 and 15 percent in
2007. Community/public foundations gave a 19 percent share of the grant
dollars. Community foundations increased their giving to human services by
40 percent in 2006 and 39 percent in 2007.
Which Grantmakers Fund Human Services?
Private foundation continued to provide the largest share of Human Services
grantmaking (48 percent), followed by corporate foundations and giving
programs (36 percent) and then community/public foundations (16 percent).

services by the sample in 2007:
