Minnesota Grantmaking Facts
In 2006, individuals and grantmakers
gave $5.2 billion in charitable contributions, an increase of 1.8
percent from 2005. Minnesota grantmakers gave a total of $1.16
billion, an increase of 13.8 percent. However, individual charitable
giving in Minnesota decreased 1.2 percent, from $4.12 billion to
$4.07 billion.

How Many Grantmakers Are in Minnesota?
In 2006, Minnesota was home to a total of 1,398 active grantmakers, an
increase of 1.4 percent from the 1,378 grantmakers in 2005. 85 percent of
the grantmakers were private foundations (1,187), 9 percent were corporate
foundations and giving programs (127), and 6 percent were community/public
foundations (84).
How Much Do Minnesota Grantmakers Give?
In 2004, Minnesota grantmaking grew to over $1 billion for the first time.
This upward trend continued in 2006. Minnesota's grantmakers gave a total of
$1.16 billion. Between 2005 and 2006, the total dollar value of grants paid
in Minnesota increased 13.8 percent. Most of Minnesota's grantmaking in 2006
came from a relatively small number of grantmakers, continuing a long-term
trend. Ten percent of the grantmakers (143) accounted for 86 percent of the
dollar value of the grants paid ($1 billion).
To What Causes Do Minnesota Grantmakers Give?
Education regained the largest share of Minnesota grant dollars, at 26
percent in 2006, up from 21 percent in 2005 and surpassing Human Services.
Human Services received the second largest share of grant dollars, at 22
percent, down from 25 percent in 2005. Public Affairs/Society Benefit
continued to rank as the third largest share, at 17 percent, a slight
decrease from 18 percent in 2005. Nationally, Health and Education were the
two largest categories, at 23 percent each. Public Affairs/Society Benefit
ranked third, at 15 percent.
Where Do Minnesota's Grant Dollars Go?
In 2006, grantmakers gave 54 percent of their grant dollars to organizations
serving Minnesota, with the Twin Cities Metro Area receiving 32 percent, and
Greater Minnesota and Minnesota Statewide each receiving 11 percent.
How Does Minnesota Giving Compare to U.S. Giving?
Compared to other states, Minnesota ranks:
- 10th in foundation giving per capita
- 14th in total foundation giving
How Much Do Individuals Give?
Individual charitable giving in Minnesota decreased 1.2 percent, from $4.12
billion in 2005 to $4.07 billion in 2006. Nationally, during the same
period, charitable giving was 0.3 percent higher. The decrease in individual
giving by Minnesotans contrasts with the nearly 7-percent increase between
2004 and 2005. The total number of Minnesotans claiming charitable
contributions on tax returns decreased slightly (less than 1%) to 913,460 in
2006. Of all Minnesotans who filed tax returns, the proportion who claimed
charitable contributions decreased from 37.4 percent in 2005 to 35.7 in
2006.
