This video and DVD captures a rare 2003 interview with former Minnesota
Governor Elmer L. Andersen, a "Minnesota treasure" who is
legendary for his leadership in private and corporate philanthropy and
public service. In the interview,
Governor Andersen shares his ideas, wisdom and advice with nonprofit and
foundation leaders on how to provide strong leadership during a time of
government funding cutbacks, economic slowdown, declines in foundation
assets and an increase in overall public scrutiny on accountability and
ethics. The Minnesota Council on Foundations asked
Lori Sturdevant, editorial writer for the Star Tribune newspaper, to
engage in a discussion with Governor Andersen. The interview was recorded
for presentation to nonprofit and foundation executives and board members
at a dinner held in conjunction with the
Council's 2003 joint annual conference with the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits.
Gov. Andersen is uniquely qualified to talk
about the issues of good governance and accountability. His involvement in
public and nonprofit service and business leadership spans nearly 70
years. He served as Minnesota's governor from 1961 to 1963, and spent 10
years in the state Legislature prior to that. Andersen's corporate
leadership in the state includes serving as president and then CEO of H.B.
Fuller for nearly 35 years. After leaving H.B. Fuller, Andersen formed ECM,
a private corporation that owned and operated community newspapers in the
suburbs and small cities north of the Twin Cities. He continues to
stay involved, and community and government leaders still seek his advice
and counsel on the issues of the day.
During the interview, Gov. Andersen
expresses his disappointment at the current "state of Minnesota"
but also his optimism that Minnesota can get "back on track." He
comments on who he thinks is responsible for the common good, why taxes
can be a good thing in some cases, and the approach nonprofits should make
when fundraising.
Included in the 23-minute recording is an
introduction by Sturdevant, who has had a close working relationship with
Gov. Andersen for many years and edited his recent memoir, "A Man's
Reach," published in 1992.
