Northland Foundation grants $523,141 to benefit northeastern Minnesota nonprofit organizations

Duluth, MN - The Northland Foundation announces that its Board of Trustees has approved 49 grants in the first quarter of the year totaling $523,141 to support the well-being of children, youth, and families; help older adults live with dignity and independence, and encourage opportunities for people of all backgrounds and abilities to work toward achieving self-reliance.

Numerous grants were made to help children and teens access high-quality educational opportunities and healthy out-of-school time programming. Among such grants were $35,000 to Grant Community School Collaborative, Duluth, to serve the educational and cultural needs of at-risk students attending Nettleton Elementary School; $10,000 to Kinship of Aitkin County to provide positive youth programming in the county; $20,000 to Volunteers in Education, Soudan, to support a volunteer tutoring program in northern St. Louis County and provide mentors to 3rd and 4th grade students; $5,000 to FIRST, in support of the Lake Superior Regional Robotics Competition in which teens in grades 9-12 compete; and $1,000 to Minnehaha Elementary School, Two Harbors, to help launch a school newspaper project for children in Kindergarten through 3^rd grade.

Aitkin County Triad, Jacobson  $1,500

In support of the education efforts of Aitkin County TRIAD to provide information on safety for seniors and other relevant issues affecting older adults.

Honor Flight Northland, Inc., Duluth  $2,500

Support to assist local WWII veterans to travel to Washington DC to visit memorials and be honored for their service.

Minnesota Citizens Federation - Northeast, Duluth  $5,000

Support for educational outreach to older adults regarding the Affordable Care Act.

Anderson Center, Saint Cloud  $10,000

To provide management and business development education for business leaders in northeastern Minnesota.

Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce, Duluth  $434

To support the Northland Foundation's annual membership to the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce.

APEX, Duluth  $15,000

To support economic development efforts in Duluth and the surrounding area.

Community Action Duluth, Duluth  $20,000

To assist low-income families in purchasing reliable and efficient cars.

Initiative Foundation, Little Falls  $1,400

To co-sponsor the MCF Community/Public Foundation Conference held in Saint Cloud on March 17-18, 2011.

Neighborhood Housing Services of Duluth, Duluth  $15,000

In support of efforts to increase home ownership and to improve the quality of housing stock across Duluth.

CHUM, Duluth  $675

To provide transportation for Duluth participants of the JRLC Day at the Capitol.

Local Initiatives Support Corporation, Duluth  $25,000

In support of community development efforts to revitalize distressed neighborhoods.

Union Gospel Mission, Duluth  $5,000

Support for the free hot meal program in 2011.

Hibbing Literacy Action Center, Hibbing  $908

To provide free books to new parents in an effort to encourage early literacy.

Grant Community School Collaborative, Duluth  $35,000

In support of programming to meet the academic and cultural needs of at-risk students attending Nettleton School.

Kinship of Aitkin County, Aitkin  $10,000

In support of youth development programs serving children in Aitkin County.

Minnesota Community Education Association, Lindstrom  $500

In support of professional development opportunities for youth development workers.

Hartley Nature Center, Duluth  $10,000

To expand programming for children ages 9-15 beyond Hartley Park.

Itasca County Family YMCA, Grand Rapids  $12,000

In support of programming for older adults and youth at the Itasca County Family YMCA.

Duluth Art Institute, Duluth  $2,500

Support for free arts programming for families.

Volunteers In Education, Soudan  $20,000

In support of volunteer tutoring programs in northern St. Louis County schools.

Northome School - ISD #363, Northome  $1,000

To expand knowledge and interest in science and math through a robotics program.

FIRST, Manchester  $5,000

In support of the inaugural Lake Superior Regional 2011 FIRST "For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" Robotics Competition held in Duluth on March 10th, targeted at students in grades 9-12.

Duluth Public Schools Academy, Duluth  $1,000

Support for after-school programming for middle school students.

CLIMB Theatre, Inver Grove Heights  $11,431

Support for programming to foster intergenerational dialogue through theatre in the northeastern Minnesota communities of Two Harbors, Silver Bay, and Ely.

Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, Minneapolis  $10,000

In support of efforts to reduce the rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. 

Life House, Inc., Duluth  $20,000

In support of services to youth who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

EARLY CHILDHOOD GRANTS

In support of efforts to increase the number of children ready for Kindergarten.

 

YOUTH IN PHILANTHROPY GRANTS                       

Duluth Public Schools - ISD #709, Duluth  $1,000

To expand the Duluth East Robotics Lego League Launch program to include a local middle school.

Minnehaha Elementary School, Two Harbors  $1,000

To make possible the creation of a school newspaper written and designed by elementary school children grades K-3.

Homecroft Elementary School, Duluth  $1,000

To support activities for students and their community to learn about nutrition, food, and exercise for active and healthy living.
