Duluth, MN - The Northland Foundation announces that its Board of Trustees has approved 49 grants in the first quarter of the year totaling $523,141 to support the well-being of children, youth, and families; help older adults live with dignity and independence, and encourage opportunities for people of all backgrounds and abilities to work toward achieving self-reliance.
Numerous grants were made to help children and teens access high-quality educational opportunities and healthy out-of-school time programming. Among such grants were $35,000 to Grant Community School Collaborative, Duluth, to serve the educational and cultural needs of at-risk students attending Nettleton Elementary School; $10,000 to Kinship of Aitkin County to provide positive youth programming in the county; $20,000 to Volunteers in Education, Soudan, to support a volunteer tutoring program in northern St. Louis County and provide mentors to 3rd and 4th grade students; $5,000 to FIRST, in support of the Lake Superior Regional Robotics Competition in which teens in grades 9-12 compete; and $1,000 to Minnehaha Elementary School, Two Harbors, to help launch a school newspaper project for children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade.
