Job Description

Purpose of Position: The Development Specialist plays a crucial role helping implement fundraising efforts to secure support through grants, gifts, and donations. The Development Specialist works directly with the Development Director and other team members to help develop and implement fundraising efforts. This position offers a unique opportunity for career development within the organization.

Education/Experience/Licensure: 

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience in fundraising, grant writing, or related fields. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently. 
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to utilize and/or learn computer skills and systems such as Microsoft office, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, CRM/donor database, and others. 
  • Strong organizational and project management skills 

Fundamental Duties (Essential Functions) include (but are not limited to):

Fundraising Strategy Development: 

  • Collaborate with the Development Director to plan, create, and implement effective fundraising strategies aligned with the organization's mission and goals. 
  • Conduct research on potential donors, sponsors, and funding opportunities. 

Grant Creation, Management, and Reporting: 

  • Work closely with grant project leads and other team members to gather information needed to create grant proposals, track project goals, manage timelines, and generate grant reports. 
  • Oversee the grant reporting process, developing and maintaining a system to track grant reporting deadlines and requirements and to monitor awarded grant project objectives and timelines. 
    • Track grant application due dates, assess data needed for each funder. 
    • Collaborate with the CFO to prepare accurate reports to grantors that detail the use and impact of funds. 

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship: 

  • Assist with fundraising campaigns targeting individual donors including annual appeals, online giving campaigns, and other activities.  
  • Build and nurture relationships with individual donors and corporate sponsors. 
  • Collaborate with the Communications Team to create materials including donor communications and appeals. 

Data Management and Evaluation: 

  • Maintain donor records in Apple Tree’s donor management system. This includes tracking contributions, communications, and information needed to personalize interactions. 
  • Use the donor management system to create donor reports, campaigns, and promotions.  
  • Implement systems for evaluating and analyzing the success of development programs and identify trends that inform future fundraising strategies.

Typical Physical Demands: Prolonged sitting or standing may be required.  Those physical movements and the degree of mobility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination normally associated with office tasks will be performed frequently. The ability to distinguish letters and symbols and to utilize telephones, computer terminals and copiers is required. Work under stressful conditions as well as irregular hours may be required. The ability to lift up to 20 lbs. is required, up to 40 lbs. is helpful, but rare in occurrence.
